The
DAFx 2012 Local Organizing Committee would like to welcome you to the
15th International Conference on Digital Audio Effects, hosted here in
York, UK.
DAFx12 has been organised by the AudioLab in the Department of
Electronics, in collaboration with the Department of Theatre Film and
Television, who will be hosting the event in their state-of-the-art
facilities on the University of York’s new campus.
DAFx12 has three full days (Tuesday-Thursday) of oral and poster
presentations, preceded by three tutorial sessions (Monday afternoon),
and followed by two further tutorial sessions (Friday morning). A total
of 64 papers have been selected, 37 as oral presentations and 27 as
poster presentations. There are 12 oral sessions dedicated to many of
the traditional DAFx subject areas - spectral processing/analysis;
physical modelling; virtual analogue; time/pitch scaling; auralisation;
spatial processing; sound synthesis; computational auditory scene
analysis; feature extraction/source separation. Newer subject areas are
also represented: non-negative matrix factorisation; the use of
touchscreen/mobile devices. We continue to follow the tradition of
recent DAFx conferences by concluding each oral session with short
poster presentations.
Each conference day starts with an invited keynote speaker. Opening the
conference will be composer Trevor Wishart whose talk – “The Music of
Speech” - will also set the scene for the evening presentation of his
latest work “Encounters in the Republic of Heaven”. Trevor Cox
(Professor of Acoustic Engineering at the University of Salford) will
consider audio effects that arise naturally from the world around us
and so inspire new ideas for the creative processing of audio signals.
Dr Frank Melchior (Head of Audio Research, BBC R&D) will give
an industry perspective by considering audio effects for applications
in broadcast media. We would very much like to thank all authors for
submitting their works, and all our reviewers for ensuring (and
maintaining) the high quality of the scientific program of DAFx12.
Our social program explores the culture and heritage of both the
University and City of York. The welcome reception will take place in
the University’s new Ron Cooke Hub, following tours and demonstrations
in the Department of Theatre Film and Television. On Tuesday evening,
we are proud to present Trevor Wishart’s latest work. The evening
programme for Wednesday takes place in two of the City of York’s
important historic buildings – the Guildhall and Mansion House. A new
work will be presented by composer Ambrose Field and the Ebor Singers,
together with newly commissioned sound installations by Historyworks,
David Chapman, John Was, Aaron Watson, Louise K. Wilson, and Geodesic
Arts. We hope that the event will allow the DAFx community to explore
aspects of the heritage and history of York through a diverse programme
of music and sound art. Finally, on Thursday evening, delegates and
guests are invited to the National Railway Museum for the conference
banquet which includes the opportunity to view a world-leading
collection of locomotives spanning the history of the railways from
their very early days to the present.
Thanks go to our main sponsors - the Departments of Electronics and
Theatre Film and Television - for supporting us in the planning and
running of this event. We would also like to thank the organizers of
DAFx11, Geoffroy Peeters, Olivier Warusfel and Markus Noisternig, as
well as Udo Zölzer for their experience, help and advice. Of course, we
must also thank all those others who have helped make DAFx12 possible -
both in the run up to and during the conference - we are very grateful
for your time and support. DAFx12 also - for the first time - makes use
of social media to strengthen our community - we encourage you to Follow

#DAFx12 during the conference to share your thoughts.
Over my many years of my attendance at the DAFx conferences, I have got
to know many friends and colleagues in this community and shared many
interesting discussions, ideas and collaborations. We hope your
experience of DAFx12 is similarly rewarding and that you enjoy our full
programme of events, while also finding some time to explore the many
other aspects of our beautiful City.
