The main venue for DAFx2012 is the Department of Theatre Film and Television on the University of York Heslington East campus. There is a helpful travel guide (interactive or downloadable) on the University website here. This also tells you about which buses connect to the University. The 44 and the 4 go from right outside the station and in particular the 44 Unibus will get you closest to the conference venue.
All workshops, lunches, oral and
coffee/poster presentation sessions, will take place here. The main
presentation room will be the Digital
Cinema, with other spaces being used during breakout
sessions, including the Black
Box Theatre for Trevor
Wishart's performance of Encounters
in the Republic of Heaven programmed specially for DAFx-12 on
the evening on Tuesday 18th Sept. as part of his Keynote
presentation.
On the Monday of DAFx-12 (17th
Sept), after our first three workshops,
there will be a tour of TFTV's facilities followed by a welcome
reception in the Ron
Cooke Hub building. This is the next building across from
TFTV, and all delegates and their guests are invited to join us for a
glass of wine and canapés. There will be an early finish ahead of the
main programme starting on Tuesday, so we encourage delegates to head
off to the City of
York to explore, or alternatively take a short walk to the
village of Heslington (there are two pubs), or visit Derwent
college on campus. There are some additional catering
facilities available across campus, but as the University is still in
vacation time, these can be quite limited. Full details of what is open
and when is available here
- use in combination with your map of campus!
The Wednesday evening concert will take place in the historic Mansion House and Guildhall buildings in the centre of York. They are currently owned and used by the City of York Council, but for DAFx-12 they have been turned over to sound artists and musicians for a series of performances and installations. Take the 44 Unibus from the conference venue into town - the venue is a short walk from the bus stop on Merchantgate. When you arrive in St Helen's Square, head for the front of the Mansion House and walk down towards the Guildhall through the right hand archway (as shown here). Drinks and canapés will be served from 7.30pm with the main programme starting at 8.00pm.
The DAFx-12 banquet will be held
at the National Railway
Museum in the centre of York. During the drinks reception in
the museum's Great Hall you will have the opportunity to get up close
to a number of classic railway locomotives, many dating back to the
time of the early steam locomotives such as Stephenson's
Rocket. There will also be a demonstrations of the Great
Hall's turntable and the huge steam powered winding wheel.
The main dinner will then be held in the atmospheric setting
of the Station Hall platforms, nestled between the Royal Trains.
Please note, coaches will
transport conference delegates to the Banquet directly after the last
session on Thursday (20th), and will depart at 6.00pm from the main
conference venue.
After the event, delegates are free to make their own way to their hotels, or sample the delights of some of York's many pubs!
