Travel Information

Getting to the UK and York:

York is a relatively small city set in rural North Yorkshire, in the North of England. It almost exactly bisects a line drawn between London and Edinburgh so it is about halfway up the UK. It does not have a major airport but is served by a number close by with good connections. VisitYork, the local tourist infomation office has a useful page about getting to the City here. However what follows are a few more direct hints and tips to help you decide how to get to the UK, York, and the conference venue for DAFx2012.

There are a number of airports with good links to York:

• Leeds/Bradford - Probably the closest regional airport. However getting to York itself is not so easy and involves a bus to Leeds Station and a 30min train ride to York itself, adding at least an extra hour to the journey. Driving direct to York takes about 45-60mins.
  
• Robin Hood Airport - Another regional airport, near Doncaster, just south of York. There is a regular bus service to Doncaster station which is on the main North-South East Coast rail line. This means very quick and regular rail services to York taking less than 30mins.
  
• Manchester - The closest large international airport with most major airlines flying in/out. There is a direct rail connection from the airport to York, however it takes about 2 hours to make the journey. Trains run direct every hour (perhaps more regularly). Best to get a direct train - if you change at Manchester Piccadilly you will only pick up the direct train from the airport a short while later, so best wait for that and get a seat :-)
  
• Heathrow the London Airports and Eurostar - They might seem a long way from York but depending on flight/train timings can be convenient. From Heathrow you can take the Piccadilly line on the Tube direct to King's Cross Station (takes about an hour) and from here get an East Coast train to York (takes about two hours). Eurostar services arrive/depart from St Pancras next door to King's Cross. If arriving into another London airport, King's Cross Station is the one to head for trains to York.
  

If you do intend to travel by train it is always best to book tickets ahead for the best price. The main weblinks are given above, but you can also use thetrainline.com for a broader search.

Arriving in York:

York station is just outside the City Walls and it only takes a few minutes to walk into the centre. Handy maps of the City Centre and surrounding area are available from VisitYork with the City Centre map being the most useful

Most taxi rides to anywhere in the City from the station can be taken for between £5-10.

The main venue for DAFx2012 is the Department of Theatre Film and Television on the University of York Heslington East campus. There is a helpful travel guide (interactive or downloadable) on the University website here. This also tells you about which buses connect to the University. The 44 and the 4 go from right outside the station and in particular the 44 Unibus will get you closest to the conference venue.

The All York Bus Ticket is probably best value - Any bus, any operator, unlimited travel anywhere in York until midnight on the day of purchase. You can buy this from your bus driver - £5. Note a weekly ticket for £20 is also available if you are here all week!

Accommodation:

We have reserved a limited number of rooms on campus for delegates, providing cheap and convenient accommodation for the duration of the conference.

Booking can be done via the York Conferences website.  We have 40 rooms available from Sunday 16th September to Friday 21st September at £45.50 per person, per night (EUR56.65 or US$71.28), including breakfast. Please use the code "DAFX12" in the promotional code box!
